Overview of the Mubende Gold Belt
The Mubende Gold Belt stretches approximately 180 km through central Uganda, encompassing Mubende, Kassanda, and Kyankwanzi districts. It is one of Uganda's most important gold-producing regions, with active artisanal mining communities generating significant monthly gold output.
Geology
The belt is characterised by Archean greenstone belts — the same geological formation that hosts major gold deposits in Tanzania's Lake Victoria Goldfields and Ghana's Ashanti Belt. Gold mineralisation occurs in:
- Quartz veins within sheared zones
- Lateritic (weathered) gold deposits near surface
- Alluvial deposits along the Katonga River and tributaries
Key Sub-Localities
Kitumbi Sub-County
The production heart of the Mubende Belt. Hundreds of artisanal miners operate pit mines reaching 20–60 metres depth. Monthly production estimated at 50–150 kg.
Kasambya Sub-County
Known for high-grade quartz vein gold. Some operators report grades of 4–8 g/t from hard-rock pits.
Kigando
Active alluvial mining along stream systems. Gold dust production is the primary output.
Production and Access
- Access: 120 km west of Kampala via Mityana road (2–2.5 hour drive)
- Monthly output: Estimated 100–300 kg across all operators
- Gold type: Primarily dust and small nuggets, 18–20 karat
- Infrastructure: Basic but functional roads; Mubende Town has banking and accommodation
Buyer Considerations
All gold from Mubende must be sold through licensed mineral dealers registered with DGSM. Equator Gold Resources is headquartered in Kitumbi Sub-County, providing direct, compliant access to local production.
Investment Potential
The Uganda Mineral Wealth Index rates Mubende District as a Tier 1 priority area for mining investment. Several large exploration companies hold license applications adjacent to artisanal zones, signalling significant upside potential.
